The awful truth is that Absolute Truth is not knowable to a human mind. This comes as more of a shock for some of us than for others: those of us who were raised in a tradition claiming to possess Absolute Truth believed ourselves to be in a specially privileged “in group” until we learned otherwise.
If you, dear reader, have been led to believe that any human person, institution, tradition, religion, or conceptual framework is the sole and infallible expression of Absolute Truth, the awful truth is that you have been deceived.
The purpose of this blog is not just to dismantle these grand narratives but to offer a space for reflection, recovery, and rebuilding. There are many of us who awoke to find our bearings lost, the maps we followed revealed as fictitious. The disillusionment can be profound, and the sense of betrayal, intense. That is the price we paid for liberation from absolute claims that demand unconditional allegiance.
The journey away from believing in an infallible, unchanging truth is uncomfortable and unsettling. It’s like traveling from a well-lit room into a dusky twilight where shapes aren’t clear, and paths aren’t straight. It is a movement towards embracing complexity, ambiguity, and the humility of knowing we might be wrong. It’s about learning to value questions more than answers and the process more than the conclusion.
The Awful Truth explores these themes. We celebrate the courage it takes to question deeply held beliefs and the resilience required to rebuild in the aftermath of those questions.
We do not attempt to convince anyone to abandon their faith or to declare that all spiritual beliefs are inherently deceptive. Rather, we acknowledge that the search for truth is a complex, highly personal endeavor that does not lend itself to simplistic absolutes.
As you join me in this space, whether as a fellow traveler who has felt the ground shift beneath your feet, or as a curious observer, I hope you find here a place of understanding and perhaps a bit of solace. We are all, in one way or another, seekers of truth—however murky and complicated that truth may be.
Welcome to The Awful Truth. Let us embark on this journey together, with open hearts and minds ready to embrace not just the comforting truths, but the unsettling, the complex, and even the truly awful ones, as we grow upwards into the light.
